OJT Frequently Asked Questions

What is an On the Job Training (OJT)?
Through the OJT contract, occupational training is provided for the participant in exchange for the reimbursement from provider (Goodwill) of up to 50% of the wage rate to compensate for the employer's extraordinary costs. (Eligibility requirements must be met for program participants.)

Is the OJT participant an employee of the company?
Yes. In an OJT training situation, the participant would become an employee of your company and is hired under the same policies and procedures, and retains the same rights, as other currently employed individuals at the facility. The program allows for reimbursement of up to 50% of the trainee's wages paid by the employer during the training period.

If the OJT participant doesn't work out, can they be let go?
Yes, you would treat this participant the same way you would any other employee. That includes any disciplinary actions or dismissals when appropriate. Ideally, if there were problems with the participant, you would notify Goodwill. Our goal would be to provide job counseling for the participant that could make the difference in them keeping their job.

What is included in the 50% reimbursement that we receive?
OJT participants should be compensated at the same rates, including periodic increases not related to individual performance, as similarly situated employees or trainees. In no event shall OJT participants be paid less than the minimum wage. Reimbursement forms are sent to the provider on a regular basis and up to 50% of the participant's wages will be reimbursed back to employer.

Wages do not include tips, commissions, or normal fringe benefits. OJT trainees are entitled to the same fringe benefits regular employees receive. The employer is responsible for 100% of the fringe benefit cost for each trainee.

Trainees may work overtime for an employer as long as the trainee does not object, and provided they are compensated at the employer's usual rate. However, overtime wages are not reimbursable. Paid federal or local holidays, recognized by the employer as being a paid day off, are reimbursable.

If I have an applicant I would like to hire, can I refer them over to Goodwill to be considered for OJT?
Yes, as long as the employee meets the program requirements we can enroll them and you will receive up to 50% reimbursement while they are training. Agreement must be in place prior to the employees first day of work. It typically takes us about a week to enroll someone in our program and get them approved.
